The Repeat Prescription Request and Authorisation Process

What is a repeat prescription?

Some medicines may be required to be taken on an ongoing basis to help manage your long-term condition. This is a repeat prescription.

Usually, one or two months' supply can be issued on a prescription and be repeated pover a timeframe agreed with you before you may need another appointment or medication review.

Some medications require closer monitoring or blood tests between appointments to make sure that the medicine or dose is effective and safe for you.

Some medicines are not issued on repeat beause they requirew more regular reviews. Examples include strong pan killers or sleeping tablets. Your prescribing healthcare professional will discuss this with you on an individual basis.

How do I request a repeat prescription?

Ways to request a repeat prescription:

Usually, requests cannot be taken over the telephone. The phone lines are for emergency prescriptions and queries.

We may ask you to nominate a preferred pharmacy for your prescription to be sent electronically. This is known as your 'nominated community pharmacy'.

How do I nominate a Pharmacy?

How long will it take for my prescription request to be processed?

We aim to to process your prescription withion two working days.

This is due to the large number of requests we receive daily, and because there are several steps involved in ensuring the precription request is safe to be authorised.

The prescription is then usually sent electronically to your chosen pharmacy. There is the option to track your prescription request using the NHS App or website.

There may be delays from time to time, particularly during busy periods, but we always do our best to ensure you receive your medicines safely and on time. Please note you can only order with 7 days supply remaining or less.
